What's New In-Store: Barefoot Venus!

When we find a product that looks as good as it works, well that makes us happy.  But when we find one that is so aromatic, feel good and irresistable that it becomes an experience, that puts us over the moon.  We brought this in for the ladies because it is simply unforgettable. We've never carried bath and beauty products in the boutique before, but Barefoot Venus (BV) has inspired us to "take the plunge"!

We will introduce our new favourite thing at the Highlands Street Festival this Sunday, June 3rd but wanted to give you, our blog and FB followers, a sneak peek.
Here are just a few of the Oh-So-Fabulous BV products we'll be carrying...

Preparing for the Big Festival this Sunday!

See Fire Inspired Poi at the Highlands Festival
With the Highlands Street Festival just around the corner, we are excited to be launching hot new brands that we will be carrying at the boutique.

Over the course of the week, we will share what is happening this Sunday at our shop, as well as events that will be taking place in Highlands throughout the day.

Last year we were new to Highlands and didn't really know what to expect... and WOW, it was an eye-opener!

"This is no penny carnival.  This is big!"

For a day filled with everything from an incredible variety of vendors to facepainting to musicians to events like Fire Inspired Poi and Horse & Wagon rides, it will be a heck of a good time with lots of interesting shopping, food and fun to be had.

At Apple Box Boutique & Sugar Blossoms Floral Design, one of our many festival features will be Cravings Artisan Gelato.  If you missed it at our April "Late Night" event, this is your chance to try fresh-made all-natural authentic Italian gelato at its finest.  There is no way to describe how ridiculously delicious this is.

Owner Charlynn studied in Italy, staying for months at a time to perfect her flavours, and believe us when we say she got it right!

Save the Date:  Sunday, June 3rd!
Then watch this blog and our FB page for more about the fun we'll be having at the boutique!

See you there!

Reimagined Monday: Bee Print Side Table

Hello and welcome to Reimagined Monday, a day that we love to share Annie Sloan Chalk Paint projects that inspire us.  We also feel it is important that not all of those projects be fantastical creations or reimaginings of antiques so rare they seem otherworldly.

While those are always breath-taking, so can bee the quiet little project... something that starts out looking quite common but bee-comes a bee-eautiful little statement about the simple things in life bee-ing a happy surpriszzzzze. (Sorry, just couldn't help it!)

With a little something special from The Graphics Fairy, Gina of The Shabby Creek Cottage put together this lovely Bee Print Side Table -- proof positive that a $5 thrift store purchase can bee-come extraordinary. (Last cheesy bee reference for today... promise *lol).

Here is Gina's Annie Sloan paint project... so cute!

Annie Sloan Project: Bee Print Side Table
"Graphics on furniture always have a way of taking a pretty piece to the next level. I love adding them to painted pieces to show a little more flair and my Nashville area customers seem to love them! Want to see how I did this one?

I started with a simple thrift store find, a side table. Only $5 at a local shop, it was in good shape and had nice lines, so it was an easy buy.

First I painted it all over with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence. I loveeee this aquaish, blueish, greenish color – it’s my favorite color, hands down! No sanding, no priming, Annie Sloan paint is pretty amazing stuff. I just wiped it down and gave everything 3 coats. You typically only need 2 coats, but I had a few spots peeking through, so I added one more just to be safe.

When the paint was dry, I took this bee graphic and printed it on my computer, layered it on top of carbon paper and taped it to hold it down. If you’ve used ASCP before, you know that it has to be waxed – I did this step BEFORE waxing.

I traced out the graphic with a fine tip pen, so that the outline would transfer to the table top.

There we go! I wanted the wings to have detail and the body to be in silhouette, so I didn’t put the body details on, but you can if you want more detail.

Then I took burnt umber acrylic paint and painted right on the lines of the wing with a fine tip brush, and filled in the body.

I watered down the paint just a touch so it would flow easier. Acrylic paint is generally pretty thick, so just a dab will do.

When the graphic was dry, I sanded it all over to distress it a bit. Now is when the magic happens!

First I did a coat of clear wax, buffed it out, then sparingly added dark wax to the areas that needed it.

And that was it! It took a little while longer for this project than most ASCP projects, simply because the legs are somewhat tedious to paint. I do love the results, though – and hopefully my customers will love it at my upcoming sale!"

What People Are Saying About Us

If there is anything that will make your day, it is positive feedback from the people that matter.  For us that is YOU, our customers.  Our shop isn't loud or franchised or blaring sirens and shining spotlights into the sky.  But what we are is very happy to be a part of Edmonton, and excited to have such wonderful and loyal customers.

We strive to offer interesting home decor and artwork that is European-inspired, shabby chic, cottage chic, casually elegant and even a little steam-punk.  Our furniture is one-of-a-kind, painted with traditional methods and paints.  We are also the central Alberta retailer of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for furniture, floors and walls and we offer all the supplies and hardware you'll need to finish your own DIY project + classes to help you get started.

Because your voice is so important to us, we wanted to share a few opinions.  We are always open to hearing more!

What people are saying about us:

"Lovely, lovely shop!  Everything about it is charming and the unique home decor alone is well worth the visit."

"Located in the quaint and stylish merchant area along 112 Avenue in the historic community of Highlands, Apple Box Boutique is a gem of a place that once discovered will become your favourite shop for unique furniture and home decor."

"Nice little shop featuring refurbished furniture, flowers and assorted other knick- knacks. It fits well into the Highlands shopping corner, straddling a line between vintage and shabby chic."

"Not just a flower shop, Apple Box Boutique shares the space with Sugar Blossoms Flowers but offers so much more.  Leanne refinishes furniture in a way that celebrates the history of the piece and the home accessories are to die for."

"Edmonton's best kept secret -- but not for long!"

Thank you for your feedback and your support!  As we grow we will always stay the same down-to-earth and friendly boutique, and will continue to value our customers every step of the way.

Project Personality: A Minty Delicious Confection!

Project Personality
with Apple Box Boutique founder Leanne Playter Korsos

Being of certain 'Southern' sensibilities, sweet tea, biscuits and sweet treats have a hold on me.  And although most rave-worthy recipes are top secret and rarely given up, sometimes something is just too good not to share.

This confection is not only scrumptious but SO pretty and perfect for a spring tea party or as a hostess gift.

Misty Minty Peppermint Patties
excerpt courtesy of Sweetpolita

"The process was really straight-forward, which isn’t always the case with candy-making, and is why I love this recipe so much. After mixing a rich and minty patty filling, I prepared and chilled the patties, then melted my Callebaut White Chocolate Couverture in a double boiler. I feel it’s so important that you use the best white chocolate for this recipe–it’s the gorgeous creaminess of the Callebaut white chocolate combined with the decadent filling that really makes these extraordinary.

Once I had the chocolate melted and sitting at about 80 degrees Farenheit, I divided it into 3 and tinted them to match the traditional Misty Mint Colours: petal pink, jadeite green, and orange creamsicle (Okay, it was simply pink, green, and orange, but I can’t seem to resist using frilly adjectives and descriptions!). What is it about this retro colour combination that makes me so happy?

I truly believe that biting into a gorgeous pastel peppermint patty tastes just that much better. You can make them any size you want, really, and serve them or package them up with a pretty ribbon... I have a feeling that I’m not the only one out there with fond... Misty Mint memories!"

Here’s the recipe:

Misty Minty Peppermint Patties

Filling Ingredients
4 cups (480 g/16 oz) icing sugar (confectioners’)
3 tablespoons (45 grams) unsalted butter, softened
1/4 teaspoon (1.25 mL) peppermint oil (ideally food grade oil rather than extract, see notes)
3/4 tsp (3.75 mL) pure vanilla extract
4 tablespoons (60 ml) evaporated milk

Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and smooth. Set aside

In bowl of electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment, on slow speed, combine the butter, icing sugar, peppermint oil, vanilla, and evaporated milk. Once ingredients are incorporated, turn mixer up to medium high, mixing for about 2 minutes, until creamy. Cover and chill filling in bowl for about 30 minutes. Once chilled enough to roll balls of filling in your hand, roll 1.5″ balls and place on foiled cookie sheet. Using the palm of your hand, gently press down on each ball to create a patty. Refrigerate for another 30-60 minutes until firm and remove when you have your coating ready to go.   (Filling recipe adapted from Joy of Baking)

Pastel Chocolate Coating:
1 lb Callebaut White Chocolate Couverture, chopped.

In a double boiler (or bowl on top of a pot), bring water to boil. Once boiling, turn the stove off (keeping pot on element) and add your chopped chocolate. Stir with silicone spatula until nice and smooth. Remove from heat, wipe bottom of bowl, and set aside, stirring continuously while cooling. When almost cool, divide into 3 and tint each lot desired colour (I used very small amounts of gel colours: leaf green, electric pink, and electric orange). Once chocolate reaches 80-84 degrees F on a candy thermometer, you can start dropping patties in, one at a time, coating both sides, and removing carefully with two forks (or chocolate dipping fork). Place on cookie sheet to set. Once all patties are dipped and coated, set tray aside in a cool, dry place to set. Don’t refrigerate while setting.

Sweetapolita’s Notes
  • You can use peppermint extract in place of the oil, but you won’t get that intense mintiness that the concentrated oil gives. It’s still very minty!
  • You can store the set patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator, with parchment or wax paper in between, for up to one month.
  • Best stored chilled, and eaten at either room temperature or chilled.

Minty delicious!

No Words Required: Tablescapes {Dining Outdoors}

Several weeks ago, I posted  a few of my favourite indoor dining tablescapes and promised that from time to time I would dust off the image collection and share it at On The Apple Box.

With the long weekend right around the corner, I'm excited to put together my first 'picnic' of the year and looked to my inspiration boards for ideas.  I hope you feel inspired too!
I love all of them, but my pick is this look:

I can't wait to start putting it together!

Now where did I leave that darned chandelier!?!
